June is Here!

George and Olive stall

Hello everyone, and welcome to June at The Old Library!

It’s a month rich with meaning. Pride Month runs all month long, World Environment Day falls on Thursday 5 June, Carers Week takes place from 8 to 14 June, and we mark Windrush Day on Monday 22 June. We’ll be flying the flag for all of them, look out for our Pride display in the library, and follow us on social media for themed book picks throughout the month.

A brilliant May

May flew by, and what a month it was.

On Thursday 15 May, Susan Verity treated us to The Road That Carried Me East, the remarkable story of her mother’s solo journey by bus from London to Bombay in 1967, through some of the most extraordinary places on earth. A packed room, fascinating stories, and a captivated audience.

On Saturday 23 May, the craft table came out for a morning of bright paper suns and painted flowers, a riot of colour that brightened the whole library for the day.

A special mention goes to our youngest volunteers, George and Olive, who ran their very own jigsaw and children’s book stall outside the library, raising over £20 for The Old Library. Thank you both, you were brilliant!

And we rounded off the month on Saturday 30 May with Children’s Story Time, reading Paddington at the Zoo by Michael Bond, full of fun, songs and (we suspect) a marmalade sandwich or two.

Coming up in June

Thursday 25 June, 7–9pm CSI: A Case Study with Jasmine White. Follow a real West Yorkshire murder investigation, from the discovery of a body in a wooded area in May 2017 through to the suspects being brought before a jury. Saturday 27 June, 10:30am for a 10:45am start Children’s Story Time: Elmer Again by David McKee. Free, just turn up. Recommended for ages 3–7 (children must be accompanied by an adult).

Opening times

Our usual opening times apply throughout June. Pop in for a browse, a coffee, or just to say hello, we’d love to see you.

See you in June!
